What is a memo or destination tag?

Some blockchains require an additional identifier alongside the wallet address when sending funds. This identifier is usually called a memo or destination tag, and it ensures the funds are routed correctly.

What is a memo/destination tag?

A memo (used by ATOM, XLM, and others) or destination tag (used by XRP) is a short piece of text or a number added to the transaction.

It acts like a payment reference, telling the recipient’s system which account should be credited.

They are especially common on centralised exchanges, where multiple users share a single deposit address.

When do I need to use one?

You need to include a memo or tag if the recipient’s platform (such as an exchange or custodial wallet) specifies it.

Required: Depositing ATOM to Coinbase or XRP to OKX.

Not required: Receiving ATOM or XRP into your personal Wraith Wallet address.

If a memo or tag is missing when required, your funds may not be credited correctly and could be lost.

Warning: Always double-check the deposit instructions of the receiving platform before sending.

Examples

Memo required: sending ATOM to a centralised exchange will usually require a memo provided by the exchange.

Destination tag required: sending XRP to an exchange often requires a numeric tag to identify your account.

No memo required: sending ATOM or XRP to your own Wraith Wallet address does not need one - each Wraith address is unique to you.

How Wraith Wallet handles memos and tags

When sending an asset that may require a memo/tag, Wraith Wallet will prompt you to add one.

The app will also remind you if you attempt to leave the field blank.

If you are sending to another Wraith Wallet user, memos and tags are not required.

Key points to remember

Some blockchains use memos or destination tags to direct funds correctly.

They are most often required when sending to exchanges or custodial wallets.

Missing or incorrect memos/tags can result in lost funds.

Wraith Wallet does not require a memo/tag for receiving crypto.
