TRON multi-sig scam (patched)
What is multi-sig?β
Multi-signature (multi-sig) is a security feature that requires more than one signature to approve certain blockchain transactions. Think of it like a joint account where several people must agree before money can move. It adds extra security by reducing the risk of a single compromised key leading to stolen funds.
How the TRON multi-sig scam workedβ
Scammers exploited multi-sig on the TRON (TRX) network by setting up fake multi-sig wallets or tricking users into joining malicious ones. Once involved, victims were misled into thinking their funds were secure when in reality the scammers had backdoor access.
Typical scam methods included:
Fake investment schemes - Scammers set up βmulti-sig projectsβ and promised high returns.
Manipulation of trust - Victims were told that requiring multiple signers guaranteed safety, but the scammer retained full control.
Social engineering - Fraudsters posed as support staff or business partners, convincing users to add them as signers.
Fake airdrops or giveaways - Users were asked to sign or join multi-sig contracts under false pretences.
Phishing - Attackers obtained enough private keys to bypass genuine multi-sig requirements.
How Wraith Wallet protects youβ
Wraith Wallet now includes a patch to alert users if an address is linked to known TRON multi-sig scams. If you encounter such a wallet, do not send funds - they can be taken immediately by the scammer.
You can also:
Check TRX addresses on TRONScan - If the permissions show suspicious signers, avoid using the wallet.
Update your Wraith Wallet regularly - Always keep the app updated to benefit from the latest security patches.
Stay vigilant - Scammers may contact you directly posing as Wraith Wallet support. Remember, official support will never ask for your recovery phrase or request funds.
Safe practices to followβ
Never share your recovery phrase or private keys.
Always confirm addresses on a block explorer before sending funds.
Avoid unsolicited offers or requests to join multi-sig wallets.
Keep educating yourself on the latest security threats.
β Thanks to the patch, Wraith Wallet users are protected against this specific scam - but staying cautious is still the best defence.
